COBOURG

Wearing a purple scarf this month shows your solidarity with victims of gender-based violence, and your support for agencies that provide resources and services like Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre.

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre is asking local residents to show solidarity with victims of gender-based violence through their November Wrapped In Courage campaign by wearing a purple scarf.

These scarves are being sold through Cornerstone, leading up to Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the first of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,

This annual campaign has worked to raise awareness of the issue since 2013. In the year since the last campaign, the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses has reported more than 52 femicides. Last year in Ontario, on average, a woman or child died due to gender-based violence every six days.

These femicides are preventable tragedies which devastate communities and families,” the press release said.

Throughout November, communities across Ontario will be coming together to show their support for GBV survivors and their children, as well as for the organizations (like Cornerstone) that provide resources and safety.

And the purple scarves signal a commitment to ending violence in our community, as well as letting survivors they know they are not alone.
