Chili for the Community: A Warm Start to the New Year

The first day of a new year holds a special kind of magic. It’s a chance to set the tone for the months ahead—a belief inspired by the wisdom of one organizer’s mother, who often said that how we begin the year shapes what follows. This idea is the heart of Chili for the Community, a simple yet powerful event dedicated to warmth, connection, and togetherness.

This gathering invites people to come together to make, serve, and enjoy chili as a community. It’s more than just a meal—it’s an opportunity to connect, share stories, and build a sense of belonging.

The Importance of Chili for the Community

The inspiration for Chili for the Community came from a deeply personal place. The event’s founder Maria Papaioannoy  understands how lonely January 1st can feel and wanted to create a space where no one has to face the start of the year alone. That’s why the event is completely free and open to anyone seeking warmth, companionship, and a delicious bowl of chili.

This year, the event is strengthened by a partnership with Greenwood Coalition, an organization dedicated to fostering community and inclusion. Together, they aim to make this event as accessible and impactful as possible.

How to Get Involved

There are several ways for community members to support this initiative:

  1. Spread the Word: The event organizers encourage sharing details with others. Graphics for printing, emailing, or posting on social media are available, and the event can also be shared directly from its Facebook page.

  2. Contribute Chili or Time: Those interested in making a pot of chili or volunteering in other ways can fill out this form to get involved.

  3. Invite Others: A simple invitation can make a world of difference in ensuring no one feels alone on January 1st.

A Special Start to the Year

Chili for the Community is about much more than food. It’s about creating moments of connection and building a stronger community. Every person who attends or contributes helps make the event a meaningful tradition that brings people together.

Together, let’s make January 1st a day of warmth, kindness, and belonging.
