Brighton and Alnwick/Haldimand Township recognized for litter clean up

Brighton and Alnwick/Haldimand Townships took home top honours in Northumberland County’s Mayors Clean Up Challenge.

Each municipality in the County competed to see who could pick up the most litter recognizing Earth Day in April.

Brighton claimed first place after volunteers collected an average of 28.0 kilograms of litter per participant. Alnwick/Haldimand had the most percentage of volunteers participating at 5.6 percent.

“County Council is proud to recognize the municipalities and volunteers who participated in this year’s challenge,” said Warden Bob Crate. “Year after year, this initiative demonstrates what we can accomplish when communities come together with a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and civic pride.”

Over the past 16 years, the ‘Mayors’ Keep the County Clean’ Challenge has grown into one of the County’s signature environmental initiatives. Since its inception, more than 35,000 volunteers have participated, collectively removing over 250 tonnes (550,000 pounds) of litter from communities throughout the region.
