Lakelands Public Health is kicking off Mental Health Week, by promoting health social interactions.

The health agency has partnered with Northumberland County libraries to set up physical displays, where residents can explore these interactive displays, which highlight the benefits of connection and ways to build social interactions, share local programs and resources, and offer a chance to win a connection-themed prize.

Libraries offer the community a gathering place, fostering social interaction through reading and other activities.

“We’re talking about connections that make people feel valued and belonging. Nobody is saying we have to go out and be friends with everybody. Nourishing those relationships which make you feel belong,” said Joanne Brewster, Health Promoter with Lakelands Public Health.

“Even small moments, like a conversation, shared activity, or time spent in a community space, can make a meaningful difference.”

Mental Health Week runs from May 4-10, with the Connection Corner Displays are physical displays with a message board on why social connection matters, its impacts on health.

There are bookmarks, colour pictures and a draw for a prize. More enthusiastic residents can participate in a challenge of activities such as talking with a neighbour, sending a message of appreciation or participating in an event or activity at the library.

“When we talk about health, we can easily focus on things like eating nutritious foods,  getting lots of sleep, and participating in physical activities. But, we don’t often talk about social health,” explained Brewster. “For some people, connection feels really difficult for a number of reasons. Other people find it very easy. The message is that social connection is for everyone, not just those feeling lonely.”
