Port Hope opens applications for new grants

By Cecilia Nasmith

The Municipality of Port Hope is now accepting applications for the Community Strategic Initiatives Funding Program, a new streamlined approach to allocating municipal funding in a way that directly aligns with the goals outlined in its Strategic Plan.

The program replaces the former Community Grants and Donations Program with a shift toward more strategic investment in community-led initiatives that deliver measurable impact and align with council-approved priorities.

Mayor Olena Hankivsky noted in the announcement that the aim is also to enhance the social, cultural, recreational and tourism vitality of the community.

“By supporting prjects that align with the Municipality's strategic pillars of being inclusive, prosperous, sustainable and innovative, we empower local organizations to drive positive change and contribute to a vibrant community,” Hankivsky said.

Each year the total funding available through this new program is subject to approval through the municipal operating budget. For the 2026 funding year – based on the first budget delivered in the municipality under new Strong Mayor legislation – eligible applicants may request up to $10,000 Approved projects may receive full or partial funding, and conditions may be applied through a service agreement.

Applications are now open for the first intake of the program, and guidelines are now available for interested applicants to review to confirm eligibility before applying – which can only be done using the official application form. Following the April 30 deadline, applications will be reviewed by an internal staff review committee and evaluated based on the published Evaluation Criteria.
