“Hearts are shattered,” said Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Thomas Carrique, following the on-duty death of Northumberland OPP SGT Brandon Malcolm.

Malclom was killed in a single vehicle crash on Highway 401 eastbound near Cobourg at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday on his motorcycle.

“He served his community with dedication to duty, honour, and who has made the ultimate sacrifice,” Carrique said Monday evening announcing the fatal crash.

Malcom joined the OPP in 2020, serving entirely in Northumberland County. He was previously a member of the Toronto Police Auxiliary and Canadian Armed Forces. Carrique described Malcolm as always wanting to be a police officer.

While authorities are investigating the fatal collision, they are appealing for witness accounts and dash video. A second crash was reported on the westbound lane of Highway 401, which closed the highway in both directions. That crash is attributed to a motorist stopping to render aid to Malcolm.

“An individual that was dedicated to duty, committed to the passion of policing, extremely proud to be a member of our Golden Helmets. I will forever be grateful to him for his service,” explained Carrique.

Malcolm’s family has been notified. Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeStoppers or the OPP.
