Lakelands Public Health is warning of flooding conditions across the region, urging residents and business owners to take precautions.

With ground conditions already unable to absorb additional rainfall, leading to increased run-off and elevated flood risk, several region Conservation Authorities have issued flood-related notices. In Northumberland County, that includes flood warnings from the Lower Trent Conservation and a watershed safety advisory from Ganaraska Region Conservation.

Residents are urged to avoid contact with floodwater, and keep children and pets away from affected areas – and be aware that floodwaters may be deeper or faster moving than they seem.

Wash hands and clothes thoroughly as soon as possible after any contact with floodwater, and do not consume food that has come into contact with floodwater.

Flooding may impact private sewage systems, with the potential for backups or surface breakouts. Residents and business owners are encouraged to reduce water use and consider pumping their septic tanks as a precaution.

Lakelands encourages residents to monitor and follow local municipal websites and communications for emergency updates and information on road closures, sandbagging and available support services.

Flooding can also impact mental health and well-being. Residents are encouraged to check in on neighbours, family members and others who may need support at this time.
