Community Care Northumberland announces its 10th annual Adopt-a-Grandparent program to brighten the holiday season for seniors throughout the county,

The aim is to spread joy by surprising seniors who may be experiencing isolation or loneliness with meaningful gifts – as was the case with more than 130 “grandparents” last year.

“This program brings smiles of appreciation, not only from our “grandparents,” but from the many individuals and families who join together to support a holiday gift and from the volunteers and staff who deliver,” Chief Executive Officer Jordan Prosper said in the announcement.

“Adopt-a-Grandparent demonstrates the true spirit of the season and the generosity of our community.”

Community Care shared the comments in a thank-you card that came from one of last year's recipients: “Thank you so much for the bag of gifts. It was so generous and really brightened my day!”

Members of the community interested in adopting a grandparent this year can call Community Care at 1-866-514-5774 or e-mailing wellness@commcare.ca

Purchased gifts may be dropped off at Community Care's Campbellford, Brighton or Cobourg office. Please deliver unwrapped gifts (gift bags and baskets are okay) on or before Dec. 4. Individuals can also Adopt-a-Grandparent by donating to the program (with Community Care staff doing the shopping).

Organizers request donors to refrain from home-made baked goods, and that hand-made items (such as scarves or mittens) include washing instructions. Other gift suggestions include gift cards for local stores or gift certificates for such Community Care programs as Meals on Wheels and Transportation.

Volunteers will begin deliveries to adopted “grandparents” on Dec. 16.
