With its overnight winter warming room now in operation for people in need, Northumberland County is inviting members of the community to volunteer their time to help create a welcoming and supportive environment.

Located this year at 600 William St., Cobourg, the winter warming room will be open seven nights a week from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. to provide a safe, warm overnight space over the colder months for those experiencing homelessness.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Preparing and serving coffee, snacks and light refreshments

  • Spending time with guests and engaging in friendly conversation

  • Receiving and organizing donations

  • Helping create a welcoming and respectful environment

“There are many different ways people can contribute, and we want to make volunteering accessible to anyone who has some time and wants to help,” manager of Homelessness Services Bill Smith said in the announcement.

“People can volunteer for an hour, an evening or whatever time works for them. There is no minimum time commitment.

“Sometimes something as simple as sitting down with someone, having a conversation and making them feel welcome can make a real difference.”

Volunteers can sign up by completing the form at Northumberland.ca/Volunteer

County staff will follow up with interested volunteers, and arrange an interview to discuss the applicant's interest and ensure the role is a good fit. Orientation and training will then be provided.
