October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and that's a big focus on fundraising for the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.

Reporting for the Foundation Carrie Low described the event they had co-hosted with the Survivor-Thrivers dragon-boat team at the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope. Proceeds from this year's gala will go toward their fundraising for diagnostic-imaging aimed at breast-cancer services. And when they launch their annual Light Up A Life campaign Nov. 12, you'll see this is the case for that initiative as well.

In all, they are hoping to raise $1.5-million for this goal.

In the first six months of the current fiscal year, Low reported, they have raised $4.165-million.

“An unplanned gift of $2.5-million in May is the primary reason,” she said.

Reporting for the NHH Auxiliary, Rick Riley expressed pride in their two retail operations – the Little Treasure Shoppe gift shop in the hospital and the Petticoat Lane thrift store on Covert Street in Cobourg.

Last month was the second-best September ever for the Little Treasure Shoppe, Riley noted.

The auxiliary bank balance is $13,000 higher than it was at this point last year, he continued. And their year-to-date retail revenue of $214,442 this year compares to $194,225 last year.

Their members have reinstituted the volunteer shift in the ICU, which is now running seven days a week.

The auxiliary recruited 14 new volunteers over the summer, Riley said, and will be participating in the Y Seniors' Fair in hopes of recruiting more.
