Cobourg announces tree collection date

Christmas Tree at the curb. By Dan Jones, Northumberland 89.7 FM News, LJI

The Town of Cobourg has announced that – weather permitting – Christmas tree collections will begin Jan. 12 and should be complete by Jan. 16.

Residents wishing to take advantage of this service are asked to have trees placed curbside by 8 a.m. Jan. 12, with the trunk facing the curb. Ensure all metal ornaments, tree stands, tinsel and other decorations are removed. Do not wrap trees in plastic, and keep them clear of snow and ice to assist in their collection.

Each year, these trees are composted and mulched for internal use by town divisions, with wood chips used around newly planted trees, on street and parking lot gardens, and along dog-path pathways.

The town has also reiterated snow clearing safety rules for residents to keep the community safe for residents and town snow-clearing vehicles.

Clear the sidewalk in front of your home of snow and ice within 24 hours of a snowfall, and do not plow or shovel snow onto any roadway (as per Highway Traffic Act provisions).

Around your property, keep gas meters clear of snow and ice, and do not blow snow onto or around fire hydrants. Clear snow and ice from fire escapes, exit doors and other emergency-exit points. Ensure exhaust vents are clear of snow drifts and ice build-up to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Be safe around snowplow by leaving adequate space when driving and, during heavy snow and extreme weather events, avoid driving if possible to keep roads clear for snow plows and salt trucks to access all areas safely and efficiently.

And again – remember municipal bylaws about overnight parking on the street. These vehicles will be fined or towed.
