Fuel spill clean-up underway at Cobourg Harbour

Clean up of a fuel spill in Cobourg Harbour is underway following a leakage from a boat experiencing mechanical issues.

Officials say the boat was towed in on Tuesday evening. Staff detected the fuel leak Wednesday and immediately began containment procedures, setting up containment booms and securing the boat in place.

However, it became clear that containment efforts Thursday were insufficient as 10 litres of fuel spilled into the harbour.

GFL Environmental has been contracted to assist with the clean-up, including the use of a vacuum truck to remove fuel from the water’s surface and the placement of absorbent pads.

Residents and passersby will notice booms and absorbing pads in the harbour over the weekend.

Booms will remain in place until the fuel is at a negligible level. Staff and GFL will reassess on Monday to determine if further work is required.

The boat owners will be responsible for the cost of the clean-up.
