Northumberland County invites members of the community to join the fight against food insecurity this September by participating in their 30 Ways in 30 Days Hunger Action Month initiatives.
The 30-day challenge encourages residents to take small, meaningful actions each day to support local food banks, reduce food waste and raise awareness of hunger in the community.
“Hunger affects thousands of individuals and families across Northumberland ever year,” Director of Health and Human Services Glenn Dees stated in the announcement, sharing statistics for the year between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025.
This period saw 5,889 Northumberland community members supported by local food banks, 30% of them under the age of 18. The total 65,164 visits represented an 11% increase compared to the previous year.
Province-wide, that period saw more than one-million unique individuals pay more than seven-million food-bank visits.
While Food Banks Canada leads national hunger-awareness efforts, Feed Ontario co-ordinates a provincial response in Northumberland, where the county's Food 4 All Warehouse and 12 local food banks work together to distribute food, provide support and champion awareness campaigns like Hunger Action Month.
County council declared September Hunger Action Month at its August meeting - “an opportunity for all of us to come together, take action, and support the food banks and programs that are making a difference in our community,” Dees said.
You can get involved in several ways.
