Cobourg

A recent conference on poverty in Northumberland included the presentation of a King Charles III Coronation medal to one of the attendees.

A highlight of Wednesday's Reducing Poverty in Northumberland event in Cobourg – hosted by Northumberland United Way and the Northumberland Legal Centre – was the awarding of a King Charles III Coronation Medal to Colborne resident Elisabeth Baugh.

In May, to mark the King's coronation, the Prime Minister announced the government's intention to award 30,000 Coronation Medals to outstanding individuals of all ages and all walks of life “who have made significant contributions to the country, a province, a territory, region or community, or an achievement abroad that brings benefit or honour to Canada.”

NUW Executive Director Alicia Vandine called Baugh “a not-for-profit legend with nearly 40 years in the health charities sector.

“Best known for her tenure as CEO of Ovarian Cancer Canada, founder and chair of the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition, chair of the Health Charities of Canada Coalition and her deeply personal work founding AboutFace, supporting individuals with facial differences.

“Elisabeth is now nurturing the next generation of not-for-profit leaders at the University of Toronto.”

She also serves as a NUW board member and uses her experience and skills to promote its mission – to help empower kids, lift people out of poverty and build stronger communities.”

Vandine said the United Way was proud to nominate Baugh for all she has done in the not-for-profit and health-care sectors, and thought this event would be an appropriate time to present the medal.

“Our Community Matters-Reducing Poverty in Northumberland event is bringing together over 90 local not-for-profit professionals and community members to discuss what poverty looks like in Northumberland County, and to talk about what gaps exist and how we can do better -working more collaboratively together,” Vandine stated.
