WNCC aces the provincial finals

Cobourg council officially commended the West Northumberland Curling Club at its March meeting on an exceptional job of hosting the Curling Ontario provincial championships Jan. 19 through 26.
The town itself had stepped forward as title sponsor of the event in the amount of $30,000. From there, the report by Manager of Recreation Lyndsay Aitken and Director of Community Services detailed costs and revenues.
The rental of the Cobourg Community Centre for the event had brought in $43,850, with canteen revenues of $11,540 and another $31,520 as the town's portion of ticket sales.
In addition to the $30,000 sponsorship, the town spent $1,100 on marketing and $14,000 in staffing costs.
The final tally was $41,810 on the plus side.
Not included in the figuring was the in-kind contribution of other staffers and departments in the hours required to make the event a success. This kind of contribution should be considered in-kind, the report said, “as these efforts support the kind of events the CCC was designed to host.”
As for the larger picture, “The province of Ontario provides the TREIM model for estimating the impact of sports tourism and other events,” the report continued, citing the Tourism Regional Economic Impact Model.
“The TREIM model report for the curling event in Cobourg is attached. If the assumptions of the visitor stays, amount of visitors and other inputs are accurate, then the model estimates the economic impact of the event to be $3-million.”
