Peterborough Public Health Medical Officer of Health and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Thomas Piggott has been named to that position for the newly amalgamated Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit.

Dr. Thomas Piggott has been named the new Medical Officer of Health and health unit Chief Executive Officer for the newly amalgamated Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit, subject to approval from the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Piggott is already a familiar face to many as MOH for Peterborough Public Health. The announcement referred to his career as an accomplished public-health physician with a breadth of professional experience and community service.

Former Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit MOH Dr. Natalie Bocking remains in the Deputy Medical Officer of Health role.

Dr. Piggott joined Peterborough Public Health in December 2021, prior to which he worked as MOH and Vice-President Lead for Population/Rural & Remote Health in the northern region of Labrador and as a field doctor with Doctors Without Borders in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He completed medical training, residence in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and his PhD in Health Research Methods at McMaster University.

The announcement carried a reminder that Haliburton Kawartha Northumberland Peterborough Health Unit is the legal name of the organization, though HKPR and PPH will remain operational with no immediate impact on programs and services. More information will be shared on the formal launch of the new organization's business name and logo later in the year.
