The Town of Cobourg has shared its plans for Remembrance Day observances, the foremost one being the Nov. 11 ceremony at Victoria Park hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133.

Members of the public are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. ceremony, prior to which a Remembrance Day Parade will depart from the Legion Hall (135B Orr St.) at 10 a.m. It will travel north on Hibernia Street, turn east onto King, then right onto Church to make its way to the park – taking the same route following the ceremony to return to the Legion Hall.

Road closures to accommodate the parade are planned from 10 a.m. to noon – Hibernia Street from Orr to King, King Street from Hibernia to Church, and Church Street from King to Victoria Park.

As well, town-owned flags across the community will be at half-staff that day.

The Legion will again host a Remembrance Day dinner, with cocktails at 4:30 p.m., and dinner at 5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for nonservice members, on sale at the Legion bar.

Meanwhile, this year's Poppy Campaign has begun, during which time tens of millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visible pledge to honour Canada's veterans and to remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today. Donations collected through this annual campaign are held in trust at the branch level for direct support for veterans and their families in the local community.

The Legion has also begun displaying Remembrance Day banners in downtown Cobourg, celebrating the men and women who served our country. Individual banners have been made possible through the donations of local community members who wish to honour the memory and the contribution of their loved ones. This tribute is made possible through a partnership between Branch 133 and the Town of Cobourg in order that everyone may reflect and celebrate their service.

Another chance to reflect and to honour comes Nov. 8 at 2 p.m., when the Concert Band of Cobourg and the Cobourg Legion Branch 133 Pipes and Drums will offer a Highway of Heroes Tribute Concert at Trinity United Church (284 Division St,), an afternoon of musical reflection that will include special performances by Chris Devlin and Jimbob Marsden. Admission is by donation, such funds to go to the Branch 133 Poppy Fund.
