A commemorative crosswalk has been installed in Port Hope to honour veterans, but coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion. Vincent O’Hanley, Sergent at Arms for Royal Canadian Legion Branch 30, first presented the idea to Port Hope Council this summer, explaining he was hopeful to fundraise enough money for the project to be completed before Remembrance Day. He says the community responded right away with donations. After having the design approved by National Legion leadership, the painting of the crosswalk was completed this week. O’Hanley says the overwhelming support for veterans and this project has been very touching.  The crosswalk is located at Augusta and Queen Streets.

The Cobourg Police Board is undertaking a forensic audit of its finances following a review earlier this summer that raised concerns. Chief Chris Leather says he consulted with the OPP and the Inspectorate of Police. At a special council meeting in October, Leather explained the audit will take several more months to complete, which will provide a clearer picture of what is occurring.

The United Way Northumberland’s Ultimate Burger Battle fundraiser is back. This time more Northumberland County restaurants are participating, expanding the number of burger creations offered. 15 restaurants will feature a signature burger, in which two dollars sold from each purchase will go directly to the United Way Northumberland to support local programming. More than 1100 burgers were sold last year, raising approximately $12,000. Alicia Vandine, Executive Director with the United Way Northumberland says this fun challenge is not only about supporting a good cause, but supporting local businesses. The event from all of November.
