Don't forget Test Your Smoke Alarm Day

The Town of Cobourg Fire Department is calling on all residents to test their smoke alarms Monday, Sept. 28, as part of Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.

Cobourg is joining communities across Ontario in this initiative in a day of action that marks the return of the Saved by the Beep campaign – with a special focus on young adults living on their own for the first time. Members of the fire department attended Saturday morning's Farmers' Market to help spread the word.

Most fatal fires occur in homes that do not have a working smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly, with batteries changed at least once a year. And smoke alarms should be replaced after 10 years of use.

By law, a working smoke alarm must be installed on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of every home in Ontario.
