The Municipality of Port Hope is pleased to announce the appointment of Cynthia Islam as the new Director of Water and Wastewater Services, effective July 20.

In this capacity, Islam will lead the Water and Wastewater divisions, providing strategic direction and oversight for operations, regulatory compliance, capital planning and service delivery to meet the community's current and future needs.

In the announcement, Islam stressed that strong communities rely on the strength of their services and infrastructure.

“I am excited to join the Municipality of Port Hope and contribute to an organization that is focused on long-term stewardship, service excellence and community well-being,” she commented.

“My leadership approach is rooted in empowering people, sharing knowledge, and building trusted partnerships to achieve meaningful outcomes. I look forward to working with the talented team at Port Hope to advance strategic initiatives and deliver reliable, sustainable services that will serve the community for years to come.”

A licensed Professional Engineer and Project Management Professional, Islam has almost a decade of municipal experience leading complex capital programs, asset management initiatives and public-works projects – most recently as Manager of Capital Projects and Infrastructure for the City of Pickering, where projects she guided and implemented include roads, bridges, sidewalks, multi-use paths, stormwater systems and street lighting.

Prior to that, she built her career with the City of Oshawa through a range of positions with increasing responsibility.

“She brings a wealth of experience in municipal engineering, capital infrastructure and strategic leadership, along with the energy and collaborative mindset needed to drive meaningful progress,” Chief Administrative Officer Mike Melinyshyn stated.

“As we continue shaping what I like to call 'Port Hope 2.0' – the next chapter of growth, innovation and service excellence – her expertise will be instrumental in helping us deliver on our ambitious goals for residents, businesses and community partners.”
