Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini dropped by Cobourg's Merwin Greer Public School Wednesday for a $10.5-million announcement – the value of a new addition that will create both additional student and child-care spaces.

The announcement specified 129 new elementary-student spaces and 73 new licensed child-care spaces for local families.

“This is an incredible investment in our community and in the future of students and families,” the MPP said.

“This $10.5-million investment in Merwin Greer Public School will create more classroom space, expand child-care options and help ensure local students have access to the modern learning environments they need to succeed.

“I am proud to see our government continuing to invest in the infrastructure that supports students, families and our community's future.”

This announcement is one of 79 school-construction projects across the province, an investment of $1.6-billion.

Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Chair Paul Brown extended thanks to the provincial government for “an addition that will greatly benefit students, staff, families and future generations.

“Schools are the very heart of the communities they serve, supporting students throughout their educational journeys from preschool to graduation,” Brown said in the announcement.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the provincial government for this capital investment that makes it possible to better support our students here at Merwin Greer Public School and continue to make KPPR schools destinations of choice for families and communities.”
