Cobourg man charged in alleged bike theft incident

A 35-year-old Cobourg man is facing multiple charges after a stolen bicycle incident in Cobourg escalated into an assault.

On May 23, at approximately 10:50 a.m., police responded to the area of Division Street and Covert Street for a report of a stolen bicycle.

The complainant reported that the bicycle had been stolen earlier that morning at approximately 4:15 a.m. The complainant located the stolen bicycle in the area of West Pebble Beach and Hibernia Street. A confrontation between the complainant and the suspect escalated, during which the suspect threatened and assaulted the complainant with rocks and a pocketknife. The complainant sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Officers located the suspect in the downtown core.

As a result of the investigation, John-Saul Cooney (35) was arrested and charged with Mischief Under $5,000,Theft Under $5,000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, two counts of Assault with a Weapon, Uttering Threats, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and three counts of Fail to Comply with Undertaking. The accused was held for a bail hearing and subsequently remanded into custody.
