SIU to investigate Cramahe man’s death at Northumberland OPP detachment

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 28-year-old man following his time in an OPP Northumberland Detachment cell.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the evening of May 24, 2026, OPP officers attended an address in Cramahe Township to do a welfare check on a man at the request of a family member. Once officers learned that the man was wanted on a fail to comply warrant, he was arrested. Due to facial injuries the officers observed the man to have, EMS was contacted.

  • The man was transported to hospital. He was medically cleared and released into police custody.

  • The man was transported to the OPP Northumberland Detachment and lodged in a cell.

  • The following morning, the man went into medical distress.

  • Paramedics transported the man to hospital. He was pronounced deceased.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.
