Flags lowered in honour of former fire chief

The Town of Cobourg advises that flags throughout the municipality have been lowered to half-staff in observance of the passing of a beloved former fire chief.

Henry Greer, known to all as Harry, passed away March 29 at the age of 97, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service to the community that includes 37 years with the Cobourg Fire Department (and as its chief from 1971 to 1990), to which he remained closely connected long after his retirement.

Greer began his career as a volunteer fire fighter form 1952 to 1956 before joining the Federal fire-service outfit known as the 26th Central Ordnance Depot in Cobourg – at the time, Cobourg did not yet have a municipal fire department.

In 1962, former Chief Greer joined the Cobourg Fire Department as a lieutenant. He was appointed Deputy Fire Chief in 1964, and Fire Chief in 1971.

Mayor Lucas Cleveland credited him with guiding the fire department through a significant period of growth and modernization.

“Over nearly four decades, he earned the deep respect of his colleagues and the community he proudly served,” Cleveland said in the announcement

“His dedication, leadership and passion for firefighting helped shape the department we know today. We extend our sincere condolences to his loved ones, and are grateful for his immense service to our community.”

Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Ashfield recalled the deep respect Greer inspired, within the department and throughout the community.

“He mentored and supported generations of firefighters, many of whom went on to serve in senior roles,” Ashfield stated.

“He was also a long-standing presence in the community and a proud ambassador for the fire service.”

Many Cobourg firefighters are remembering Greer's visits to the station, and the stories he shared from his long career.

Cobourg's council and staff members extend heartfelt condolences to Chief Greer's family. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on April 21.
