Work begins on King Street West
By Cecilia Nasmith
The Town of Cobourg Public Works and Engineering Division announces construction work on King Street West from the Cobourg Creek bridge to William-Ontario Street that will begin March 30 and take about 10 weeks.
NPL Canada (an approve contractor working on behalf of Enbridge Gas) will begin relocating a portion of the existing underground natural-gas distribution main along that portion of King Street West. Notices to all properties within the Phase 1 area have been distributed.
Throughout the process, access to properties will be maintained for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. At times, King Street West may be reduced to a single lane to accommodate the work, at which time traffic flaggers and signage will be in place. At the end of each working day, both lanes will be reinstated.
Enbridge will be working to co-ordinate with property owners affected by the service replacement work in advance, who may experience short interruptions to gas supply.
The town's Asset Management Plan identified this project as a high priority for capital investment. Work to be completed includes water main, sanitary and storm sewer replacement, as well as road resurfacing. Enbridge must complete its gas main work prior to road reconstruction commencing.
The work has been separated into two sections of King Street West. Phase 1 covers the area designated for the work that begins March 30, covering 460 metres. Phase 2, slated for 2027, covers the Cobourg Creek bridge west to Burnham Street.
Staff are preparing to tender the King Street West reconstruction in early April, with construction work anticipated to begin in June.
