Three Northumberland municipalities are teaming up to present an April 16 information session aimed at potential council candidates.
The townships of Cramahe, Hamilton and Alnwick-Haldimand host the 6:30 PM event at the Baltimore Community Centre (at 23 Community Centre Rd.), a free public workshop that offers “a clear down-to-earth look at what it means to serve on council,” according to the announcement issued by Cramahe Township.
“There's no pressure to run. The goal is simply to help residents make an informed decision about public service and understand the responsibilities that come with it.”
It's a chance to learn how municipal government works, the roles of mayor, deputy mayor and councillor, their responsibilities and time commitments, key nomination and election dates, public expectations and even tips for first-time candidates.
It's an ideal opportunity for residents considering a run for municipal council, as well as anyone interested in local government.
This partnership includes all three Northumberland municipalities that do not have Strong Mayor designation.
“By working together, we hope to encourage residents to learn about council life, ask questions and consider public service with confidence,” the announcement said.
