Northumberland County reminds residents that April 1 will usher in increased garbage-disposal fees at its Community Recycling Centres.

While electronics, household hazardous waste, tires, household recycling an clothing will still be accepted free of charge, otherwise the minimum tip fee of $13 per 100 kg. (or $130 per tonne) will rise to $15 per 100 kg. (or $150 per tonne).

For leaf and yard waste, the disposal fee has been reduced from $130 per tonne to $75 per tonne.

The new rate applies to all quantities, with a minimum $7.50 charge for loads weighing less than 100 kg.

Residents are still able (and encouraged) to dispose of leaf and yard waste free of charge through the county's curbside-collection program that runs throughout the county between April and mid-December.

There is no limit to how many leaf-and-yard-waste bags can be set out at the curb for collection.

These disposal fees were last updated in 2020. Since that time, operational costs have continually increased.

These adjustments will allow the county to continue to operate its CRCs in a financially and environmentally sustainable manner, protecting these essential assets for future generations.
