Cobourg

For an 18th year, Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre will bring the community together for an important cause when Walk A Mile returns Oct. 4.

Over the years, this event has brought in more than $608,500 to help women, children and youth to access shelter, counselling, housing and prevention programming – serving more than 3,000 individuals across Northumberland County last year alone.

Originally a men's-only walk that encouraged participants to wear red high heels to “walk a mile in her shoes,” the event is now a family-friendly walk through downtown Cobourg.

Executive Director Nancy Johnston said in the announcement that it's always uplifting to see the community come together for the event.

“Whether you walk solo or with a team, we invite everyone to join us in raising awareness and showing support. Bring your family, friends and even pets for a morning filled with purpose and fun,” Johnston added.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. outside the Cobourg Police Station, with breakfast provided by the Cobourg Lions Club, coffee from Pulse Coffee House and sweet treats from FrostBites. Then, the incredible Cobourg Legion Pipes & Drums will lead the walkers down King Street.

Any kind of footwear is welcome.

Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for youth under 18, with walkers encouraged to raise additional pledges to support Cornerstone's vital work.

The announcement included thanks to key event sponsors. Johnston listed Stiletto Sponsor Ontario Line Clearing and Wharram Tree Service, as well as Challenge Sponsors Canadian Tire Cobourg and Post Consumer Brands.

Matt Wharram, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ontario Line Clearing and Wharram Tree Service, said they look forward to the big day.

“We are proud to support Walk A Mile. It is a feel-good event that brings people together and shines a light on issues that matter,” Wharram said.

Registration is now open at cornerstonenorthumberland.ca/walkamile. There is also the option for teams and individuals to create their own on-line fundraising pages through their JustGiving platform at justgiving.com/campaign/cornerstonewalkamile2025
