Northumberland County will begin construction on the Burnley Bridge Replacement Project tomorrow, July 11, 2025.

The bridge, located on County Road 29 south of Noonan Road in the village of Burnley, will be fully closed to all traffic until November.

During construction, County Road 29 at Burnley Bridge will be fully closed to traffic.

Local detours will be in place during the closure, with signage directing drivers along County Road 29, McDonald Road, County Road 22, and Jakobi Road.

The current bridge has served the area for more than 70 years.

Due to the resulting age and wear, a full replacement was decided to be the most sustainable option.

The new structure will feature two lanes, steel beam guardrails, and a re-aligned roadway for safer travel.

A permanent speed reduction will also be in effect in the area.

“We understand that this closure will impact travel through the area, and we are working to ensure clear communication and safe alternative routes for residents and visitors,” says Manager of Infrastructure Peter Deshane. “This is a significant infrastructure upgrade, and we appreciate the public’s patience as we complete this important work to modernize and future-proof the bridge.”
