A contingent from the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities recently toured Northumberland County.
Among recent visitors to Northumberland County, count a contingent from the Canadian Association of Nuclear Host Communities for a look at the region's infrastructure, economic-development projects and community assets.
The association represents a broad cross-section of communities with a common interest as actual or potential host of nuclear technology. By leveraging their collective experiences, they help member communities build essential infrastructure that aligns with their local missions and visions.
As Canada looks to expand its nuclear industry (with, potentially, the new Wesleyville development in the Municipality of Port Hope) to support climate-change mitigation efforts, this role will help with exploring and assisting with informed decision making and resource sharing.
Their visit included an official meeting at Cobourg's Venture 13, from whence they toured such key sites as Colborne's Ontario Agri-Food Venture Centre, Cobourg housing and industrial developments and county infrastructure projects.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland, who as a county councillor represents Northumberland on the CANHC board, provided the guided tour, highlighting the county's commitment to sustainable growth and innovation.
“With nuclear technology playing an increasingly important role in Canada's clean energy future, it is essential for communities like ours to engage in meaningful discussions about its potential impact,” Cleveland said in the announcement.
“Hosting CANHC members allowed us to showcase the strengths of Northumberland County while learning from the experiences of other nuclear host communities. We look forward to continuing these conversations as we explore the possibilities for our region.”
As plans evolve for the Wesleyville project, engaging with CANHC will provide valuable insights and connections to ensure informed discussions about the region's future as a possible host for nuclear expansion.
