Police warn of employment scam

Cobourg Police are warning of an employment scam.

Recently authorities learned the victim submitted a resume through an online job platform. Shortly after, they received a text message from a fraudster posing as a recruiter for a legitimate company, stating they had been selected for an interview and subsequently hired.

The victim was instructed to create online advertisements using personal funds and purchase cryptocurrency through a digital wallet set up by the scammer.

The victim was promised commissions to reimburse these expenses. Police ask residents to take caution, verify the employment and never send money or provide financial information without first confirming the legitimacy of the employment.
