A press release direct from the office of Mayor Lucas Cleveland announces that negotiations for the Cobourg Public Library's 2026 budget have proven successful.

A Strong Mayor Directive had required the library to limit its budget increase for 2026 to 3%. There were concerns that this minimal an increase might result in service reductions. But the announcement credits “constructive dialogue” with allowing the library to maintain its current level of service and operating hours with a negotiated budget increase of 3.41%.

Cleveland's release termed the 3% limit a target, not a hard limit.

“I want to sincerely thank Adam Giddings, our Director of Corporate Services and Treasurer, as well as the executive team of the Cobourg Public Library and Councillor Adam Burchat for their leadership throughout the process,” he said.

“Together, they found efficiencies and savings that allow us to protect service level.”

The announcement concludes by saying the Office of the Mayor continues to review all departmental budgets with a focus on accountability, service protection and long-term sustainable financial planning, with the first budget Cleveland has produced under new Strong Mayor Powers due to be presented to both council and the public on Dec. 8.
