Cobourg has a new water tower. Community leaders unveiled the new D’Arcy Street Elevated Tank and Booster Pumping Station, located behind the Cobourg Community Centre today. Four years ago the town identified a need for increased water infrastructure, embarking on construction, which Mayor Lucas Cleveland said is on time and on budget. He adds the water tower will be instrumental in community growth.

“We’re not only meeting the needs for today, but we’re also building for tomorrow’s growth, which we know is coming,” said Cleveland at the announcement Wednesday.

The tower incorporates a three-pump booster station on the first floor of the tank while being fully capable of independent operation from the tank itself. The second-floor houses electrical, chemical and support amenities, while the third floor provides a dedicated space and specialized infrastructure for telecommunications providers. It also has decorative lighting to allow for the tower to be illuminated in different colours or any occasion.

“The water tower is now complete and over the last month it has already started servicing the Town’s needs. The tower has become a new striking landmark. It stands as a symbol of our community’s spirit, vitality, and ingenuity,” explained Cleveland.

The tank can hold 1.1 million gallons of water, while the pumps distribute nearly 2000 gallons per minute.

Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini said the water tower is important for Cobourg’s prosperity.

“Why does this matter? It matters for housing. It matters for new business opportunities, local employment opportunities. Replacing aging infrastructure ensures we’re managing our water resources more responsibly and sustainably.

Both the federal and provincial governments contributed approximately $3.5 million towards the project.
