Cobourg
Dominating Cobourg's downtown, Victoria Hall has so many stories to tell.
On Oct. 17, the Victoria Hall Volunteers invite you to hear a few, and have some fun, at a free open house event All About Victoria Hall from 3 to 8 p.m.
It's a great opportunity to explore this amazing structure at 55 King St. W., to step back in time to learn about its rich history that began in 1860 at a grand ball in the second-floor concert hall that was attended by the Prince of Wales. The building was a significant accomplishment for designer Kivas Tully, contemplated at a time when Cobourg was in the running to be the capital of Upper Canada.
Father of Confederation James Cockburn practiced law in Victoria Hall, and a ground-floor room is preserved to reflect what that office may have looked like.
By 1970, the structure showed its age and required costly repairs that the town hesitated to undertake. There was even talk of bulldozing it and putting in a parking garage. It is fortunate that Lenah Field Fisher was on council at the time, and her leadership is credited with saving the building. It would be a long slog, at least a decade, but the building was restored.
And out of that effort was born the Victoria Hall Volunteers, dedicated to preserving this iconic hall.
Join them Oct. 17 for guided tours, a scavenger hunt, children's activities and an afternoon tea (small fee required).
Whether you're new to town or just looking for a fun day, everyone is welcome.
