The Cobourg Fire Department has issued a holiday safety reminder – as you string up your lights and hang your decorations, keep fire safety in mind

The Cobourg Fire Department has issued a holiday safety reminder – prioritize fire safety as you put up your Christmas decorations.

Along with bringing festive cheer, holiday lights and decorations can also pose potential fire hazards if not used responsibly – as seen in a recent call to a fire set off by a small set of Christmas lights. Such incidents are usually the result of improper or damaged decorations. While it was quickly extinguished without injury to anyone, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of practicing fire safety at this time of year.

The department urges you to keep these essential safety tips in mind when hanging your holiday lights.

Inspect before use – Check for such damage as frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections, as damaged lights can spark and cause fires.

Look for ULC/CSA certification – Use only lights and decorations that are certified by safety-standards organizations such as the ULC or CSA. This is your assurance that they meet strict safety requirements. Also, before you buy or use these lights, check for product recalls to ensure the items are safe.

Turn off the lights – Always turn off holiday lights before going to bed or leaving your home to reduce the risk of electrical fires. Consider using timers for added safety and convenience.

Avoid overloading outlets – Plugging too many lights and decorations into one outlet can overload circuits and cause overheating. Use surge protectors or power bars with built-in circuit breakers.

Be sure to keep all your decorations (especially flammable ones like garlands or paper ornaments) well away from such heat sources as fireplaces, radiators and candles. And don't forget the year-round fire-safety essentials.

Working smoke alarms – Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test them monthly to ensure they are working correctly.

Home escape plan – Develop and practice a home fire-escape plan with your family, ensuring everyone knows two ways out of every room and a designated meeting place outside.
