Deputy Mayor: Sherry Hamilton

Sherry Hamilton is running for Deputy Mayor of Cramahe Township. As a native of Northumberland County, she has lived most of her life here.

Her background as a scientist, entrepreneur and business development coach are the foundation of her professional life.

Sherry has been a volunteer on various boards and community building initiatives for most of her life. Encouragement from friends and neighbours who recognized her political engagement and strong belief in democracy convinced her to run for Council in 2022.

After a “learning term”, she now feels well prepared for the role of Deputy Mayor. The focus of her work will be to help restore trust and improve community engagement. A community that feels shut out of decisions loses trust in their government.

Sherry is concerned about Strong Mayor Powers and Regional Chairs. She sees these as the erosion of democracy. Communication must be two-way and must include all voices to have effective governance and a healthy democracy.

During this term of Council most municipalities in Ontario saw their property tax increase between 19-24%. Although Cramahe is at the lower end of this average with an 18% increase overall, these numbers are staggering.

Recovery from Covid and downloading of Provincial government services that were never meant to be paid for by property tax are the primary culprits for much of these increases. As homelessness, food bank usage and struggling families become all too common, municipalities need a New Funding Deal with the Province. Downloaded services must have funding attached.

Diverse housing options, primary care for all, and conversations about food security that include our farming community are essential to maintaining our sovereignty and upholding our values. Data driven decisions that reflect our values and support our people are key to addressing these needs.
