Laura Knegt is a longtime Brighton resident, community leader, and former
Deputy Mayor. Having called Brighton home since 1980, she grew up on an apple
farm and became involved in the community at a young age while going to the
local market with her parents.
Laura has served eight years on the Brighton Municipal Council, including four
years as Deputy Mayor from 2018 to 2022. She has been actively involved in local
economic development, tourism, and community initiatives, including serving as
Chair of the Applefest Advisory Committee to help lead one of the area’s most
cherished annual celebrations. She has dedicated many years to serving and
strengthening the municipality.
Key priorities for the upcoming term of council include:
- Responsible Growth: Meeting local housing needs by focusing on increased
density and affordable housing while still striving to maintain the Brighton we
love.
- Agricultural Preservation: Managing growth by directing new residential
developments to urban areas, while protecting agricultural land and keeping rural
farming areas south of Highway 401 safe from development.
- Economic Development: Attracting commercial and manufacturing industries
to create local jobs and offset residential taxes.
- Fiscal Responsibility: Maintaining balanced budgeting focused on community
needs and the bottom line.
- Infrastructure Projects: Advancing key local initiatives, including the new
fire/ambulance station with a substation south of the tracks, road reconstruction,
paths and trails, and a new arena/community centre.
- Accessibility: Ensuring the community remains accessible for all residents.
Through her municipal service, local business experience, and volunteer
leadership, Laura continues to contribute to the vitality, character, and success of
Brighton.
