With a core business of helping fuel Canada's nuclear industry, Cameco – one of the area's largest employers – is also helping to power student learning in Northumberland, thanks to a recent $10,000 donation to Northumberland Food For Thought.
The funds will help local schools purchase healthy foods for their student nutrition programs through an on-line food-ordering system that helps them replenish supplies more easily. And because the service includes delivery, it cuts down on trips to and from the grocery store.
“We are very fortunate to have great corporate citizens like Cameco that give back to their community and, in this case, ensure local students are well nourished and able to learn to their full potential in school,” NFFT Community Development Co-ordinator Beth Kolisnyk said.
“Cameco's latest donation will not only help stretch school budgets, but will also increase the quality of food available in their programs.”
NFFT is a non-profit partnership that supports Student Nutrition Programs across the region – free and voluntary programming that provides food to thousands of students in the area every day.
Kolisnyk added that this programming helps support academic success by removing hunger as a major obstacle to learning.
Cameco is a long-time Northumberland Food For Thought supporter, providing thousands of dollars worth of donations over the years.
“A full stomach is the fuel students need so they can focus on learning,” Fuel Services Division Vice-president Dale Clark said in the announcement.
“The great work of Northumberland Food For Thought helps to make a positive difference to students, and we are proud to support this important work.”
Along with the support of residents, businesses and organizations, local Student Nutrition Programs also receive financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services through its lead agency, the Peterborough Child and Family Centres.
