Cornerstone adds virtual supports

By Cecilia Nasmith

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre announces two new virtual supports, Cornerstone Connect and the Counselling Corner Podcast, to provide on-going access to services despite closures and physical distancing limitations of the pandemic.

Cornerstone Connect was actually launched in June 2020 as an on-line extension of Cornerstone’s support line. Cornerstone Connect is now available from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. seven days a week, available via online webchat at cornerstonenorthumberland.ca/chat, or via text message at 289-210-4774.

Executive Director Nancy Johnston said in the announcement that this program was born out of necessity.

“When individuals are trapped at home with their abuser due to the ongoing pandemic and are not able to pick up the phone and call due to lack of safety and privacy, an alternative method is needed - thus Cornerstone Connect was launched,” Johnston said.

“We believe this is an invaluable addition to Cornerstone’s programming, and have shifted and extended our hours so that we can create additional opportunities for women and youth who need our support to access us.”

Counselling Centre podcasts are hosted by two staffers from the community services department. It will launch Jan. 11 with the intent of opening up conversations about daily life and daily stressors. Community Counsellor Christina will join Child and Youth Community Counsellor Lee-Ann to explore monthly topics related to very real human experiences.

“With COVID-19 came new barriers we have not had to navigate before,” Manager of Community Services, Christina Colacicco said in the press release.

“Creating a podcast gives us a new avenue for service delivery, a broader reach throughout the community, and a unique way to eliminate barriers to accessing service in our current state of the pandemic.

“The Counselling Corner is a great listen for the entire community, but is also a way for clients to engage in additional services,” Colacicco added.

The first three episodes will be released Jan. 11, with trained counsellors discussing relevant issues and provide advice, referrals and support. New ones posted on the second Monday of each month. Access these podcasts on Spotify, Anchor, or Cornerstone’s website.

Meanwhile, Cornerstone Connect offers daily access to services (between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.) through text and on-line chat platforms that keep conversations confidential and secure through safe encrypted technology. Text at 289-210-4774 or chat on-line through the Cornerstone website.

Cornerstone encourages everyone to spread the word about these important resources.

“Some of our friends and neighbours are living with abuse in their homes and the community. Cornerstone Connect and The Counselling Corner with Cornerstone FVPC provide a secure, supportive way to reach out for help and advice,” Johnston said.

“Now, more than ever, we need to look out for one another.”
