Opera House in Port Hope

The Architectural Conservancy of Port Hope is looking for memorabilia relating to the opera house above the former Royal Bank on Walton Street in Port Hope.

The Opera House was built in 1869 but after a fire in 1899 it was rebuilt as a Music Hall. From 1910 to 1928 it primarily showed silent movies until it was ordered to close for fire safety reasons. The last time the space was actually open to the public was for an Open Doors Ontario event about 20 years ago.

The Architectural Conservancy of Port Hope says the interior has changed quite a bit from pre- fire to post-fire and they are trying to document those changes.  They are looking for: - Any photographs of the interior of the hall upstairs. - Any poster bills, advertisements, ticket stubs, or new paper stories about the Opera House. - Any street photos that show any part of the Bank Building from the exterior.
