Tell the library your Oscar picks

By Cecilia Nasmith

Oscar night is coming, and the Cobourg Public Library (and both Hamilton Township branches) invite you to mark your ballot and enter the draw by Feb. 8 for the chance to win an amazing gift basket from CVS Midwest Tapes.

In other February new, all three branches will show their love on Patron Appreciation Day – Feb. 14 for Cobourg, Feb. 15 for Gore's Landing and Bewdley. Drop in during regular hours for a treat as their way of saying thanks.

The library helps winter seem a little brighter with some special programming or all ages.

Feb. 11 – Genealogy 101 (7 to 8:30 p.m.) at the Gore's Landing branch helps adults figure out where to get started on this fascinating pursuit.

Feb. 13 – James Cockburn Day celebrates the 201st birthday of Cobourg's own Father of Confederation with demonstrations, programs and workshops, and teachers are invited to register their students for this unique opportunity.

Feb. 15 – No-Sew Bandanna Tote (noon to 1 p.m.) is the craft project at the Bewdley branch for all ages. Supplies are provided, and registration is required.

Feb. 20 – Crafty adult programs are offered in both Cobourg ad Bewdley branches. In Bewdley, Learn How To Quilt (7 to 8:30 p.m.) is designed for anyone who has ever wanted to learn this skill. In Cobourg, Colour Me Calm (6:30 to 7:30 p.m.) offers a relaxing new potential hobby. Registration is required for both.

Multi-day programming is also planned for all ages.

Zentangle Hearts (Feb. 1 to 14) is a teen program that invites participants to melt away the stress by colouring.

Valentine's Around The World (Feb. 8 to 14) is a chance to make a Valentine for someone special in the children's department, while learning how the holiday is observed in other countries.

STEAM Club (Feb. 11 to 15) at the Bewdley and Gore's Landing branches presents a challenge to families that involves frozen bubbles.

Book clubs continue to offer a wonderful winter pursuit. In Cobourg, the Trending Topics Book Club meeting is set for Feb. 12, where you choose a book related to the month's topic (romance this month) and come to the 6 p.m. meeting ready to discuss it, The Gore's Landing Book Club meeting is scheduled for Feb. 4 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and the Bewdley Book Club will meet Feb. 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Regular day-of-the-week programming continues, making it easy to mark your calendar.

MONDAYS – Laughing With Baby at 11 a.m. offers a half-hour drop-in story time for babies aged 24 months and under. Also on Mondays at 2 p.m., it's movie time, with listings available at the library.

TUEDAYS – Teens and adults are invited, every other Tuesday, for Gamer Night, with all the hot games available from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and 25. And while you're enjoying D&D, Magic:The Gathering and other favourites (courtesy of Video Game City and the Northumberland Gamers Guild), don't forget the free pizza (courtesy of Pizza Pizza).

WEDNESDAYS – Family Story Time from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. offers pre-schoolers and their care givers stories, songs, rhymes and crafts designed to help the little ones develop early school skills. Also on Wednesdays, two monthly programs will be taking place. Home-schooling families are invited for a fun and educational get-together Feb. 19 from 2 to 3 p.m. (with this month's theme Superhero Stories). And on Feb. 5, the Teen Advisory Group meets from 4 to 5 p.m. – a time of games, activities and finding ways to improve library programming and services (this month's theme is sweet treats).

THURSDAYS – Learn how to knit or crochet at the Bewdley branch Thursdays from 7 to 9 p.m., and start on your very own Care Square (this group does not meet on Adult Craft Nights).

FRIDAYS – Also at the Bewdley branch, it's Family Story Time from 10 to 10:45 a.m., a time of songs, stories, rhymes and a craft designed to help children develop early school skills. And in Cobourg, it's movie time at 2 p.m.

Just a reminder - the Cobourg branch will be closed for Family Day Feb. 17.
