BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind community members to be on the lookout for school buses and students as Tuesday September 3, 2019 marks the beginning of another school year.

There will be a high volume of students travelling to and from school. Some students will be walking, or riding their bicycles while others will be getting on and off school buses at their designated areas. For some youngsters it will be their first year and an entirely new experience so please exercise patience.

The public is reminded that every driver needs to focus 100% of their attention on the road and to put away all unnecessary distractions. Slow down in school zones, respect the posted speed limits and be aware of approaching school busses with their alternating red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Drivers who fail to stop for busses with their lights activated are subject to being charged under of the Highway Traffic Act resulting in fines and demerit points. Remember that these laws are in place to protect our children who are at times easily distracted.

Parents should take time to review safe routes to and from school with their children who will not be taking busses, and educate them to be aware of their surroundings at all times. It is also important for students to put away distractions such as cell phones as they may not see potential dangers until it is too late.

The Northumberland OPP is urging motorists to drive safely and responsibly, particularly when travelling through residential areas and school zones. Let's all do our part to ensure that every student arrives to and from school safely this year.
