Road Closures

In Port Hope, we’ll have road closures today. On Ward Street from Elgin Street to Roseglen Road and Deblaquire Street From College Street to Ward Street will be closed much of today to accommodate the TCS Invitational- Lucky 13 for grades 5-8.

Tomorrow, Ward Street from Elgin Street to Roseglen Road will be closed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to accommodate the Terry Fox Run.

Stabbing in Brighton

The Northumberland OPP along with Northumberland Emergency Services responded to reports of a stabbing near Main Street in Brighton earlier in the week. When police arrived on scene, they observed a 37-year-old injured male. The male was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

A 30 year-old female has been arrested and charged with several offenses related to the crime. The accused is currently in police custody awaiting a bail hearing. If you have any information related to the crime, please contact police or Crime Stoppers.

Hunger Report

Staff from Northumberland County’s Food 4 All Warehouse submitted a re­port to Council today, recommending that Council declare September as Hunger Action Awareness Month in Northumberland. This report included the release of the 2018 Hunger Report.

Throughout this month, the Food 4 All Warehouse is promoting the “30 Ways in 30 Days” calendar: a month-long campaign which recommends one helpful action residents can do each day in September to respond to hunger in our community.

Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination

Local pet owners may visit Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinics that are being held in Northumberland County this fall According to Bruce Barthorpe, a Public Health Inspector with the HKPR District Health Unit, “Rabies is fatal, so getting pets vaccinated is an important part of caring for animals and being a responsible pet owner.”

The Clinics cost only $30 per animal and are cash only. No examination of the animal will take place at the clinic, and participating veterinarians ask that dogs be on leashes and cats in carriers.

Hispanic Heritage

October was proclaimed Hispanic Heritage Month in Northumberland County at yesterday’s meeting of County Council. Council encouraged the community to learn more about Hispanic culture by partaking in cultural community events during the upcoming month of celebration and recognition.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Northumberland Hispanic Cultural Club will be organizing various community events during the month of October.

The events include a gala, film festival, concert, gourmet food festival, and an art and heritage exhibition.

Sports

The Northumberland Baseball Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday, October 1 at 7pm. They will be meeting at Kelly’s Homelike Inn, 205 Third St., Cobourg.

In pro ball, the Jays bats again went silent. Miguel Estrada was solid, giving up just 1 run in 6 innings. However, the Jays managed just 1 run off the bat of lead-off hitter Billy McKinney, who also had 2 hits. The Orioles got 2 runs and that was all they needed for the 2 to 1 final.

In preseason hockey, The Toronto Maple Leafs downed the Ottawa Senators 4 to 1. Florida defeated Montreal 5 to 2.

Off the ice, the Buffalo Sabres signed forward Sam Reinhart to a 2-year deal worth over 7 million.
